You can’t deny that the most intense and emotional sport in the world has to be football. The amount of hype it generates is unlike any other, so naturally, a football anime like Blue Lock would be highly anticipated.

The anime portrays the sport in its glory and adds an exciting and unexpected twist to it.

To find and create the most formidable striker for the national team, the show puts over 300 players from all over the country in a prison-like facility for training.

And it doesn’t stop here. Coach Jinpachi Ego, who suggested the idea, puts certain conditions on these players. These strikers will be pitted against each other, and those who lose will be barred from joining the national team forever.

Following this excitement, Blue Lock has revealed a new character promotional video featuring the protagonist Yoichi Isagi for the anime adaptation premiering this year.

Contrary to Yoichi’s intimidating looks in the anime’s visuals, the promo video shows us the striker’s feelings.

It starts with Yoichi screaming his lungs out due to a mistake he made in an important match, but he later receives an invite to Jinpachi’s Blue Lock project.

While he is super nervous on the inside, Yoichi sees this as a second chance to redeem himself as his eyes gleam with ambition and determination.

Yoichi is undoubtedly a super talented player with untapped potential, but he has become unsure of himself after his grave mistake due to his selfless attitude.

Blue Lock is a facility that aims to produce a selfish and goal-hungry striker, and Yoichi will have to work hard to keep his morals aside for this one.

I like this story because, unlike other shonen anime, this one encourages players to be selfish and be in the spotlight. This is an effective strategy to a certain point as it motivates the players to do their best.

But at the same time, it can create a feeling of toxic competitiveness among teammates, so I’m curious about how it tackles such a theme.

About Blue Lock

Blue Lock is a Japanese manga series written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura. It has been serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine since August 2018. Blue Lock won the 45th Kodansha Manga Award in the shōnen category in 2021.

The story begins with Japan’s elimination from the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which prompts the Japanese Football Union to start a program scouting high school players who will begin training in preparation for the 2022 Cup.

Isagi Youichi, a forward, receives an invitation to this program soon after his team loses the chance to go to Nationals because he passed to his less-skilled teammate.

Their coach will be Ego Jinpachi, who intends to “destroy Japanese loser football” by introducing a radical new training regimen: isolate 300 young strikers in a prison-like institution called “Blue Lock”.
