4. Anime Production

Let’s look into the technical details of this upcoming anime to check what influences the production of ‘Beastars Season 2’.

I. About the Studio

Orange Studio will be returning to produce the second season of Beastars. It is an animation studio that specializes in 3DCG animation. It is known for its exaggerated 3D and directing style which varies greatly from other traditional styles in CG.

Orange has produced several animation works like Black Bullet, Dimension W, and the Land of the Lustrous.

Shinichi Matsumi will be directing the second season as well. He was an episode director for Rurouni Kenshin and Shingeki no Bahamut.

II. Animation Quality

Orange had successfully adapted the manga into a sophisticated CGI rendering. Though all characters are of different species, their facial expressions have a wide variety.

Orange has experience in this from their previous work in Land of the Lustrous. The easy movement of combat to death the animation breathes life in every character.

Orange made a point to show that CG anime can look just as good as hand-drawn ones. The color palette of the anime doesn’t clash with the characters and its truthfulness to the source material is very fan indulging.

Voice actors usually just give voice to the on-screen characters, but in Orange, the cast does something else too.

The studio tweeted to announce that the sequel is a work in progress.

5. Manga Updates

Paru Itagaki’s series was launched in 2016. Since then there have been 19 tankobon manga volumes so far.

In September 2019, Itagaki stated in an interview that the manga would at most have 20 volumes.

In a January 2020 chapter’s author note, Itagaki commented that the ‘End is in sight’. The manga may release the final volume and end by mid-2021.

6. Will There Be a Season 3?

Beastars has grown immensely in popularity since the anime release, so we might get more than 2 seasons by the studio.

As the previous season adapted almost 50 chapters, the upcoming season will adapt the chapter 48-98, covering the Murder Incident Arc.

So far there are 170 chapters released, therefore, there is enough material to make another season.

7. Was Season 1 good?

Beastars does an excellent job of plot progressing in 12 episodes. From subdued beginnings at Cherryton Academy to bloodbaths in the final episodes, all the while hinting horror and mystery sub-plots all over.

Like Zootopia, Beastars is set in a civilized world where animals or rather, prey and predators live side by side.

This gritty story is not for kids, it is a dark, mature series with graphic scenes exposing the underbelly of the society. Though the main characters are teenagers, the idea of the anime is very adult.

The entire premise of the series is the predator and prey dynamics. It portrays a society that can only exist by ignoring their beastly nature. Though lions and bears may dine on eggs in the Academy, donning a uniform doesn’t stop a wolf from almost devouring a rabbit.

Legoshi is a shy wolf who still retains his carnivorous instincts. As he grows closer to Haru, a rabbit, he starts confusing his romantic attractions with hunting instincts.

The deadly clashes of these animals could be interpreted as any other human conflicts in the world like gender, class, or racial inequality reflecting our real issues in a furry way.

Overshadowing the drama, action, romance in the show, Beastars is an undercurrent of violence rampant on campus. There are multiple instances of scared herbivores running about, carnivores on defensive and the politicians attempting to keep the peace.

Philosophically it’s a story about instinct vs rational thought. That’s the crux of this anime, whether it be grounded in an animal’s instinct or the high school power play.

The show is directed so well that you sometimes forget that there is crossbow brandishing panda to take down carnivores or the real nature of rabbits in our world.

However dark it may be, a star-crossed lovers story always makes a hit. Along with some love triangles, kidnapped teenagers, and a murdered teenager the sequel has many interesting arcs to cover.

10. Recap of Season 1

In a civilized society of anthropomorphic animals, an uneasy tension exists between carnivores and herbivores.

At Cherryton Academy, this mutual distrust peaks after a predation incident result in the death of Tem, an alpaca in the school’s drama club.

Tem’s friend Legoshi, a grey wolf in the stage crew, has been an object of fear and suspicion for his whole life.

In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, he continues to lay low and hide his menacing traits, much to the disapproval of Louis, a red deer and the domineering star actor of the drama club.

When Louis sneaks into the auditorium to train Tem’s replacement for an upcoming play, he assigns Legoshi to lookout duty.

That very night, Legoshi has a fateful encounter with Haru, a white dwarf rabbit scorned by her peers.

His growing feelings for Haru, complicated by his predatory instincts, force him to confront his true nature, the circumstances surrounding the death of his friend, and the undercurrent of violence plaguing the world around him.

Beastars factors in on high school drama, romance, relationship power dynamics, and a coming-of-age story. This anime has it all and one of the best anime of the year.

While at the same time, undergoes an experience of self-discovery and newfound confidence.

At the end of the first season, it was reported that Louis was missing in the paper, and the last we saw him was during the confrontation with Shishigumi.
