Bandai Namco and Akira Toriyama Unveil New Project: SAND LAND

Remember that mini manga series called SAND LAND that Akira Toriyama published back in 2000? Well, if you loved that story, you’ll be thrilled to hear that it’s getting revived.

As many know, Akira Toriyama is known for the Dragon Ball universe, but he also has some highly underrated works in his portfolio.

One of these works is SAND LAND which Akira Toriyama is reviving in collaboration with Bandai Namco. The company has also revealed a teaser for the same featuring panels from the original 2000 manga.

SAND LAND project - Teaser Trailer

Bandai Namco has stated in the teaser that it will reveal more information regarding the project on December 17 and has a countdown going on for it on the website. Not so coincidentally, the Jump Festa starts on the same day, so the event will be extra special this time.

The teaser features the protagonist Beelzebub looking over a barren wasteland and saying ‘why did the world have to become this?’ If you have read the eight-chapter manga already, then you know the story behind it.

For those who don’t know what the tale is about, I’ll give you a heads-up.

The story takes place in a bleak dystopian future where war has destroyed the entire Earth, with only a sandy barren wasteland left behind. A greedy and selfish king controls the water supply of this land, leaving the population begging for basic needs.

In such desperate times, Sheriff Rao begins searching for a long-lost lake and asks the king of demons for help. The demon king sends his son Beelzebub and his assistant, Thief, to handle the situation.

This unlikely trio then sets out in search of the lake while encountering all kinds of foes, including the greedy king’s army.

Despite being created by the same person, Beelzebub and Goku share no similarities whatsoever. While one is the personification of sunshine and rainbows, the other is quite literally the son of the king of demons.

Regardless, we love them both equally, and I can’t wait to see what Toriyama and Bandai Namco have planned for this project.
