Attack on Titan Final Season 4 Updates

Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin), created by Hajime Isayama, released in 2013 during the spring anime season and took us all by surprise thanks to its novel concept. With breathtaking gore and sadism, this bloody anime attracted even non-anime watchers just for the violence. It gained popularity and became the top-rated anime of the season in no time. With the end of season 3, a teaser trailer for the upcoming season (which will sadly be the last season of Attack on Titan) released. Here’s all scoop.

Quick Summary

Here’s a quick summary of everything you need to know about the new season:

  • Release Schedule: Fall Anime season 2020
  • Confirmed Returning cast: Eren, Mikasa & Armin
  • Streaming services for season 4: Crunchyroll, Funimation, Amazon Prime
  • Number of episodes: 12-25 (Probably going to have 2 parts, following the trend from Season 3)
  • Trailer: https://youtu.be/FnMY3OlXv7g

Now let’s dig a little deeper.

1. Trailer Breakdown

Attack on Titan Season 4 Trailer – Anime TV

The trailer was dropped by the animation studio right after the ending of season 3 to keep fans interested in the storyline. The trailer doesn’t give away much other than one image of an unidentified character, who is behind bars and has the same scars on his eyes that are caused by Titan transformations. Considering how season 3 ended, it’s time to introduce some new and exciting characters. Mikasa’s voice can be heard saying “Eren, please, come back”. The trailer, however, does confirm that this is the last season of Attack on Titan. Confused? Well for good reason! There are a lot of manga chapters that still haven’t been adapted into anime and moreover, the manga series has not yet reached its conclusion.

In an interview with the Yomiuri Shimbun, Hajime Isayama said that the manga series is reaching its conclusion as well, with an end expected in one or two years.

2. Release Schedule

As stated by the trailer and other official sources, the anime will be premiering in the fall anime season of 2020. Season 3 of Attack on Titan was cut into two parts, with the first running from July to October and the second running from April to July. It is expected that the next season will follow the same trend, to keep fans on the hype train for as long as possible.

Episodes are expected to be released weekly and we will not get the whole season in one go. It is also challenging to drop a full season in time for fall 2020, as the animation quality (which is a big draw for the show) from WIT studio is meticulous and time-consuming. The exact date of release has not yet been announced.

NHK General TV will be premiering Season 4 in Japan, however Crunchyroll, Funimation and Amazon Prime will be releasing the English subtitled version of the same shortly after the original release for the English speaking audience of the show.

The official logo for the final season is now live with a new tagline, which reads “The Final Season.”

4. Returning Cast

So far only the lead cast members have been confirmed to return into the final season for Attack on Titan. This includes:

  • Eren Jaeger – voiced by Yûki Kaji
  • Misaka Ackermann – voiced by Yui Ishikawa/Trina Nishimura
  • Armin Arlert – voiced by Marina Inoue/Josh Grelle

New cast members for the upcoming season have not yet been revealed.

5. Expected Storyline for the Final Season (Spoiler alert)

The storyline of Season 3 revolves around exploring the world outside the walls. The walls inside which Eren was born, isn’t the only refuge of humanity from the monstrous Titans but is a place for the descendants of Titans to forget the memory of their history and live out the rest of their days.

Since the Scouts are now travelling to the previously unexplored haven, Eldia, we’re going to see some new characters and locations, along with the recurring lead cast. Reiner and The Beast Titan will definitely make a return, this time on their own home. Historia is bound to face challenges in her kingdom, with side stories to show while the Scouts are on the main stage.

However, given the fact that this is the last season, it is going to be an interesting experience to see how WIT studio handles adapting the entire story yet incomplete in the manga. Many parts are bound to be clipped and hopefully, it doesn’t ruin the season by making it seem fast-paced and rushed. There are going to be many time skips following the jump towards the end of season 3 between the Corps’ victory and Eren reaching the ocean.

The Nine Titans mentioned in Season 3 will definitely make an appearance. We have no clue about their powers and what they are going to be, but they’re definitely going to be on the same scale as Eren’s Titan form. To wrap up the series, there’s probably going to be a massive all-out battle between the nation of Eldia and those suffering in it. The scouts are going to have a major role in this battle.

Along with this, given its mysterious nature, Attack on Titan will probably throw all the fans in doubt about their actual understanding of the world of Titans and go deeper into the history and making of Titans. Personally, I hope there are going to be even more thrilling action scenes to surpass the ones that have already taken us on an emotional rollercoaster.

Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) Plot

Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by Titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and worst of all, seem to do it for pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls which are even taller than the biggest Titans.

Fast forward to the present and the city has not seen a titan in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren Jaeger and his sister Mikasa Ackerman witnessed something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a Colossal Titan that appears out of thin air.
