Are Sonju And Mujika Evil in The Promised Neverland?

As the orphans from Grace Field fall into despair, two mysterious characters, Sonju and Mijika, extend a helping hand.

After successfully escaping from their “home,” Emma, Ray, and the other kids are barely surviving in the treacherous demon-filled world.

While Mr. Minerva’s coded messages are of help, there’s little they can do with deadly monsters surrounding them from every side.

As Emma faints, a mysterious human-like figure appears and guides the children to a safe place, while on the other side, a struggling Ray is saved by someone on horseback.

It seems that with pursuers from the Grace Field behind, and mysterious demons extending a helping hand in front, the children choose the latter.

While these demons, now identified as Sonju and Mujika, appear to have good intentions towards the kids, there’s no knowing when they will end up as food. The Grace Field orphans have escaped from their “home,” but at what cost?

1. Are Sonju and Mujika Evil in The Promised Neverland?

Sonju and Mujika are not evil in The Promised Neverland despite being demons. Their religion prohibits them from consuming humans, cattle children, in particular. They helped Emma, Ray, and the other Grace Field orphans only with the desire to save them.

Emma and Ray succeeded in escaping Grace Field along with the other orphans, save for Norman, who was already sent away. Rip.

However, for these kids who were thrust into an entirely new world where they were considered food, it was easy to fall into despair. Thankfully, not all was doom and gloom, as Sonju and Mujika came to their rescue.

I. Who Are Sonju and Mujika?

Sonju and Mujika rescued Emma, Ray, and the other children and brought them back to their shelter. They even nursed Emma back to health and taught everyone ways to survive in the wild among demons.

However, who exactly are they? Well, as it turns out, Sonju and Mujika are demons themselves, but unlike others, they do not consume humans.

Mujika was born as an anomaly as she did not need to eat humans meat to maintain her form and intelligence. Furthermore, her blood also had the ability to stop the demons from devolving without relying on eating humans again.

After learning about her existence, the demon royal family, the five regents’ heads, and the Ratri clan considered Mujika a threat to their promise and killed all the cursed demons except her.

After the elimination of her clan, Mujika came across Sonju, a demon whose religion prohibited him from consuming human flesh, and joined him in traveling the Demon World.

In order to stay safe from Mujika’s pursuers and other demons, they created a hideout where the Grace Field children were eventually brought to.

II. Why Are Sonju and Mujika Helping Humans?

Despite not eating humans, as demons, there is no need for Sonju and Mujika to help Emma and Ray, let alone the other children tagging along with them. Is it purely out of the goodness of their hearts that they saved them, or is there an ulterior motive?

Sonju and Mujika helped Emma, Ray, and the other children from Grace Field with the desire to save them. However, the reason why they wanted to do so is morbid and sadistic.

Mujika rescued the children from the pursuing demons because she wanted to capture and return them to Grace Field herself.

By doing so, she and Sonju would be granted an easy life for over half a year, and neither the demon royalty nor the Ratri clan would pursue them.

Sonju, on the other hand, convinced Mujika to save the escapees without handing them over to Grace Field. However, the reason he did so was because of his strong desire to eat human flesh.

While Sonju’s religious beliefs prohibited him from eating humans, he believed that it only included farm-raised children and not “wild” humans that were naturally born and raised in free human-settlements.

Sonju helped Ray, Emma, and the other orphans so that they could grow up free and breed, providing him an endless supply of “wild” human prey.

By the end of the series, Mujika grew attached to the kids, thus redeeming her for her thoughts and actions earlier; however, whether Sonju retained his desire to consume “wild” human meat is unknown.
