Elizabeth Moss, who led the grave dystopia of The Handmaid’s Tale in the Hulu Original adaptation is back with another powerful story. The Emmy-awardee will be returning in Apple TV’s latest order, Shining Girls.
Based on an eponymous novel by South African author Lauren Beukes, the story has both the sci-fi and serial killer genres.
Not only will Moss lead Shining Girls but also be one of the executive producers. She had also served as an EP on The Handmaid’s Tale.
The book adaptation will be in a series format and has been described by Apple as a “metaphysical thriller”.
Moss will be portraying Kirby Mizrachi, the lead character of the book, who is a Chicago-based reporter. Moss makes a narrow escape from an assaulter who she tries to track.
This pursuit changes her life upside down opening a pandora’s box she isn’t prepared for.
The book was lauded for its extraordinary portrayal of murder and a complex temporal structure which has a time-travelling serial killer who kills across six decades in Chicago.
Titled The Shining Girls, the book saw its serial killer inspired by the shining light of the women he goes on to murder.
Announcing the series order this Thursday, Apple TV+ announced that Silka Luisa (Strange Angel) will adapt Beukes’ work for TV.
Luisa will also be an executive producer on the show. She will also be involved in Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way among other projects.
As for Shining Girls, Apple TV+ also has in the works: Lisey’s Story, written/executive-produced by Stephen King and starring Magnolia‘s Julianne Moore.
Then there is Mosquito Coast, starring The Leftovers‘ Justin Theroux. Finally, Hedy Lamarr, a historical drama starring/executive-produced by Wonder Woman Gal Godot is also set to land soon.
Meanwhile, the multiple Emmy-winner Moss has also been cast as Texas murderer Candace “Candy” Montgomery in the upcoming UCP limited series Candy.
Set in 1980, the series follows a court ruling that sets a Texas housewife free for murdering another woman in self-defence. She had struck the wife of a former lover with an axe 41 times, killing her.
Well, it seems like gore is the new romcom in 2020, at least for Ms Moss. Hoping for the productions to begin soon!
