Netizens Upset Over German Censorship of Akame ga Kill!’s Spinoff

Who might have thought that the biggest threat for blood-thirsty waifus would be censorship? These sure seem to be dark times, folks, as Akame ga Kill!‘s spinoff Hinowa ga Crush! faces cuts and edits in Germany.

It seems that not even our katana-wielding 2D girls (fighting for justice, sometimes) can escape from the law after decapitating people like a popsicle and committing war crimes.

The 2010’s quintessential dark fantasy series Akame ga Kill!’s spinoff titled “Hinowa ga Crush!” licensed by German publisher Kaze Deutschland will face censorship in various scenes to conform to German law.

The publisher also announced that the rating of the Hinowa ga Crush! the series has been raised to ages 18 and above due to the portrayal of violence and dehumanizing war crimes throughout the story.

Additionally, the publisher has stated that some isolated scenes in the manga even qualify for criminal prosecutions, and the editorial will remove such content without exception.

The decision has made the company a target for mockery by fans, primarily because the company noticed the “problematic scenes” after licensing and decided not to disclose details about the further censors.

This decision will be detrimental to the fans and the trust of the consumers and readers alike.

True to its name, the cult franchise is known for its gore and over-the-top violence; the same holds for the spinoff series Hinowa ga Crush!

The saga features the fan-favorite character Akame shipwreck on an island eventually found and befriended by Hinowa. In return for Hinowa’s care, Akame aids her in bringing freedom to the island of Wakoku.

This decision is a surprise to me as Kaze publishers also have rights to series like Tensura, where genocide and child soldiers are more of a norm than deviation.

Hopefully, the censorship will not come at the cost of the story. Until then, you can go through our watch orders to catch up to the series.
