After what seemed a very long time, the fourth season of Rick and Morty came to a close this Sunday. By long I don’t mean the season was a drag but it just made the fans wait a lot.
But I think Rick and Morty has proven to be the Birkin Bag of TV animations -hand crafted, expensive to own and in need of a hell of a longer time to create than your regular machine-made cheap leather bags.
So there are no complaints about the quality of what comes out, but it’s the time! The show’s creators suddenly decided on a four-month delay mid-season, releasing 5 episodes in the next calendar year after the first 5 came on air in 2019.
Sure, it included the latest in thing – coronavirus – with Rick telling his grandson to look “straight into the bleeding jaws of capitalism” and buy things, since “no one is out there” shopping.
This after there was already a gap of two years between the seasons 3 and 4 when the fans seemed to go crazy watching and re-watching the old seasons.
But then I am sure that proved to be a good prep for what was coming in season 4 given a number of older plot points were addressed in its 10 episodes.
Well, you just cannot complaint about this wonderfully weird family drama set in a science fictional world. There is always something to make up for the shortcomings.
When is the next season out?
Going forth however, there are speculations the show’s quality would need a lot of work to maintain. Given that it was reordered for a whopping 70 episodes, we can expect much less time between each episode and season. Here’s hoping the showrunners know what they are doing.
Meanwhile, there is no news yet on the next season. However, in the days leading up to the release of season 4, we did get a glimpse of the season 5 episodes under construction when writer Jeff Loveness shared the same on Twitter.
What’s the expected plot?
In more ways than one, season four was found to deviate from the regular adventure-centric Rick and Morty stories. This season, however, focused more on the emotional arcs and developing the characters themselves.
The series picks up from Rick’s resounding defeat in season three’s finale. Forced to abandon his feud with the president and failing to prevent Jerry from returning home, Rick is faced with a major shift in the balance of power.
The finale is an even bigger surprise when Rick’s cowardice is up for display after a whole season of singing his praises as the scientist that he is.
In other episodes, we also realise that Morty and Beth are creators of their own misery rather than the innocent victims of Rick’s ego. Then there is also a new form of jazz, accidental genocide, talking cats, heists, and even a pet dragon.
But the finale especially sets up the base for the next season and its brilliance is only added upon by the advanced animation and outlandish sci-fi concepts.
If that wasn’t enough it takes the whole of Rick and his daughter Beth’s relationship of the past four seasons and turns it upside down in one of the most heartbreakingly thrilling experiences.
For the next season, we expect the creators to go all out with surprises and meticulous planning because that is what we got in season four.
A quick recap
For all the Rick and Morty virgins, Rick Sanchez is a genius mad scientist who abandoned daughter Beth for years before coming back into her life.
He now lives with her family outside of Seattle. Rick is eccentric and can do anything and go anywhere, thanks to his amazing scientific inventions. Family isn’t exactly his priority but he manages to come through in times of an emergency.
Morty Smith is a 14-year-old high schooler and Rick’s grandson who accompanies him on many of Rick’s adventures — often unwillingly.
Summer Smith is Rick’s granddaughter, and is a couple of years older than her brother, but quite a bit cooler.
Beth Smith is mom to Morty and Summer. She got pregnant at her high school prom and is now a successful horse surgeon.
Jerry Smith is Beth’s husband whom Rick can barely stand.
Together they make up one of the best TV shows of our time.

Rick and Morty airs on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, usually on Sunday nights at 11:30 p.m. PT. Old episodes are available for streaming on Hulu, and now on HBO Max, or you can buy whole seasons or individual episodes on Amazon Prime or YouTube, or whole seasons on DVD, if that’s your thing.
